BACHELOR OF EDUCATION SCIENCE

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

The Bachelor of Education (Science) programme is designed to produce professionally qualified teachers who will be competent in teaching science subjects in Secondary Schools and middle level colleges.

In the first year, students must take mathematics and chemistry, and any other (physics and botany/zoology) as content subjects. In the second year of study, a student drops one of the content subjects and pursues the remaining two, one as a major and the other a minor. The major subject is that which the student is expected to teach up to form the IV level of secondary school, and must therefore spend more time covering its content. For the minor subject the student is normally teaches up to form II level and the content coverage is therefore less and is normally completed by the end of the third year of study. The professional courses (methodology) for the two subjects are given equal emphasis. Human Resource courses are offered by the School of Human Resource Development.

Objectives

The Department of Education Science endeavors to achieve the following:

  • To prepare science teachers who will be able to teach science subjects namely physics, chemistry, biology and mathematics at secondary school level in Kenya, regionally and globally, in the general framework of science education.
  • Equip the student teachers with professional knowledge in science education, skills and techniques of science teaching.
  • Make student teachers appreciate science education as a discipline that will lead to better preparation of science teachers.
  • Maker a deliberate effort to promote research in the teaching/learning of science and the use of research findings in promotion of science teaching.
  • Identify itself with the local situation through research with a view of coming up with teaching approaches tailored to suit our local conditions and beyond.
  • Link up with other world centers and institutions involved in science education for purposes of exchanging findings on the latest knowledge in science education.
  • Initiate new programmes in science education such as postgraduate diploma studies leading to bachelors degree in science education.
  • Develop into a center of excellence in science education that will develop process, store and disseminate knowledge to both the local and the international community, through seminars workshops, publications etc.
