BACHELOR OF EDUCATION (GUIDANCE AND CONSELLING)

PROGRAMME STRUCTURE

Reports of drug abuse among the youths, socially unacceptable sexual adventures, academic underachievement, poor study habits, serious misunderstandings between teachers and students is common in Kenyan educational institutions. These have led to students expulsions from school, and even students dropping out of school. Furthermore, misunderstandings between parents and their children, clashes between students and communities surrounding their schools, and conflicts among the students
themselves are attributed to the rapid changes that have taken place in society in general and our educational institutions in particular.

Therefore, there is need to train and equip the school Personnel (Counsellors) with sufficient skills in order to prevent or minimize the effects of such calamities. The trained counsellors can also assist members of the society in such areas as: Family counselling, decision making, marriage counselling, parenting and child rearing techniques, how to care for the sick etc. This degree programme in guidance and counselling is proposed for this purpose.

Grading Scale

Degree Classification

Degree are classified into first class honours, second class honours (upper division) second class honours (lower division) and pass.

The degree shall be graded as follows:

Class	Mark range in %	Grade
First Class	70-100	A
Second class honours (upper division)	60-69	B
Second class honours (lower division)	50-59	C
Pass	40-49	C

For the purpose of the degree classification, all marks in all years shall be considered unless otherwise approved by Senate.

Objectives

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of Bachelor of Education (Guidance and Counselling) are to enable graduates of the programme to:

Utilize the acquired knowledge, skills, attitudes and values to assist students to adjust psychologically, socially, morally and academically in school, home and community environments.
Identify and handle students with special needs, talents and disabilities and to refer those in need of special assistance.
Assist fellow teachers and parents in developing skills and attitudes to handle students individually and in groups in solving their academic, social and psychological problems.
Assist students, parents and teachers by creating career awareness and guiding in career choices depending on individual abilities, interests and available career opportunities.
Assist educational curriculum planners develop syllabi in line with the learner's developmental stages, special aptitudes, and the world of work.
Utilize the knowledge gained to counsel individuals who are experiencing some difficulty problems.
